Accepting Guest Articles ? SEO Guest Blogging Tips Only a Writer Would Know

writer guest blogging tips

Part of creating good SEO is having a blog on your website, and part of having a blog on your website is having great content on that blog. This is where SEO writers come into play. Writers of course don’t have to be focused on SEO (that can be your job), but most writers who offer guest articles to a blog know a thing or two about the process. They know what it means to use keywords naturally, they know how important link-ability is, and they know how to analyze a website and decide if it’s quality in the eyes of Google.

To make a long story short, writers know a thing or two about creating a blog that appeals to great online writers. You have your classic tips—ask for pitches first, never make too many edits, have a “guest post” tab, etc.—but writers can offer you a few tips that are less well-known.

From a Writer: A Few Unique Thoughts for Websites Accepting Guest Articles

Understanding the ins and outs of your business means understanding your audience. When it comes to accepting guest articles on your website, the potential writers are essentially your audience. You can offer them a great backlink, but that’s no long something special anymore (every company has caught on to why that’s important).

You want to create a great place for your contributors, and that means listening to their observations. Below are some of the things that writers notice when it comes time to guest post on a website:
  • There is nothing worse than writing for a site that doesn’t allow you to subscribe to comments.
Subscribing to comments on a post that you’ve written is great because you don’t have to keep checking back to see if someone commented. It shows up right in your inbox, and you can be sure to you’re replying to everything, even months later. It’s good for the website, the writer, and those commenting, so it’s worth the little bit of extra time it takes to make it happen.
  • Telling a writer about other sites that you own is like hitting the jackpot.
If you own more than one website, mention that to writers that ask to contribute to your site. In many cases, the writer will be able to contribute to that site as well, so it’s a win-win situation.
  • Telling a writer you are not going to accept an article is much better than just ignoring the issue.
It seems that sometimes editors don’t think that writers want their inboxes full of “no thank you,” so it’s better to avoid sending an email altogether. This is certainly not the case. Even if you want to be very short with a writer, it’s better to get something than nothing at all. This will help the writer stop wondering what’s going on with a particular article and get them out of limbo.
  • If you don’t have an actual email address on your contact page, a writer might move to a new site.
There are absolutely pros to not putting a physical email address on your contact page (spammers, for one), but in some cases this isn’t ideal for writers. Many writers like to write articles first and then try and send the article to a website. Websites are often more responsive when this happens because they know that you’re serious. You don’t have to sit there and wait to maybe get a response from a random contact page that you filled out (and therefore have no record of in your inbox). It’s just not ideal.

So what’s the moral of the story for small businesses?

If you want to accept guest articles on your blog, keeping these things in mind will give you a better chance of creating a good relationship with your writers. This doesn’t mean that you have to make your guest posting process easy, but just be aware of some of the things that will help writers be more successful (and ultimately help you become more successful).

Seven SEO Tasks to Complete Before Even Thinking about Hiring an Agency

There are many small business owners that try to find a balance between hiring an SEO agency and trying to do a few things on their own. It makes sense to want to have control over your website, and it makes sense to familiarize yourself with the process first so that you can hire a great agency. However, there is a fine line between what SEO tasks a company should perform first and what SEO tasks a company should leave to the experts. If you’re trying to figure out what you should do before you hire an agency in order to keep this control, don’t sweat it. Below lists seven things to keep in mind:

SEO tasks
  1. Have clear goals in mind. This might be a no-brainer to most, but it’s worth mentioning just in case. Before you set out to hire an SEO agency to help your efforts, make sure that you have clear goals in mind. This doesn’t necessarily mean SEO goals (rank number one by this time, earn this many backlinks, etc.), but rather means goals for your company in general. Who is your audience, what do you want your audience to gain, etc.
  2. Hire your own great content writer. Understanding great SEO doesn’t mean much if you don’t understand great content. Most SEO agencies will be equipped with content writers, but it’s helpful to have your own writer that you hired working with your company. This will help you begin to understand what it is you truly want out of your content, and it helps give you control at the start. It’s tough to know what you want until you really get going, so hiring your own writer is a great way to make that happen.
  3. Begin building links. Some might advise against this because there is a chance that a company will start building bad links, but the majority of companies can handle building links for a short while before consulting the help of an agency. Starting to build internal links as well as linking out to other websites that are well known is a good way to build up your PR and credibility before an agency gets to you. It will help speed things up.
  4. Foster relationships across the web. It’s never a bad idea to get started talking with others across the web. Write guest articles and start establishing those relationships. This will also help speed up your agency’s efforts when it comes time.
  5. Dabble in social media. Set up a social media account for your company on all the big networks—Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and LinkedIn. You might not know exactly how to optimize them, but at least having a presence will help give you a jumpstart.
  6. Install an SEO plugin. Installing an SEO plugin to your site will help give you an idea about what it takes to optimize a piece of content. This will help you know what to look for when you do hire an agency.
  7. Familiarize yourself with the source code. This is a bit trickier, but some aspects of web development aren’t too difficult to understand. Do a little bit of research on the canonical tag and familiarize yourself with what it looks like and why it matters. Hint: This is the tag that deals with duplicate content!
Of course, many people are able to complete all SEO tasks without the help of an agency or an expert. It is usually a good idea to consult one or the other and/or attend seminars to make sure you’re on the right track; however it’s incredibly possible to complete these steps listed above and then just keep going.

Have you hired an SEO agency in the past? Did you find that there were SEO tasks that you wish you had completed first? Let us know your story and your thoughts in the comments below.

Ten Unique Ways Small Businesses Can Win at Link Earning (Part I of II)

We’re seeing the industry shift now that massive corporations finally understand the value of online marketing. Enterprise level SEO is becoming more prominent. This is a great opportunity for SEOs who can appeal to clients with that stature, but it presents a problem to SEOs and small businesses who have limited resources.

In a world of massive promotions and big budgets, how can small businesses and local search optimizers set themselves apart? Here are first five strategies you can leverage to grab that much needed attention in the online sphere.

1. Host an Event

Events can be an incredibly powerful way to capture links that would otherwise be impossible. It’s so effective that any local event of sufficient size is bound to attract some links. That said, you can really up the ante and pull in a huge amount of SEO value if you optimize the event for online benefit.

First things first; you’ll need an event page on your site. Without a page, you’ll miss out on a tremendous amount of SEO value. This is the page you want to promote through all of your online and social media channels.

If you’re selling tickets, keep the ticket sales page separate. If you use Eventbrite to set up ticket sales, you can get a followed link out of it. Same goes for Brown Paper Tickets. Meanwhile, you should be able to get your event listed in tons of event listing directories and local newspapers. These are relevant directories that people actually use, so they make for perfect links. Yes, you should take advantage of listings even if they’re nofollow, assuming there’s any real traffic potential (and there always should be when you are manually building links).

In addition to local event sites, you should also take advantage of national ones like Meetup, Eventful, and Events.org.

Since odds are high you aren’t the first business to host an event in your area, there’s also nothing wrong with scoping some of the other local event pages with Open Site Explorer to see where they’re getting their links.

I hope it’s obvious that your event should be more than a tool to get links from event sites. You may need to hire a contractor to set up the event (preferably one who links to their clients), and you should certainly put a great deal of thought into how to monetize the event, or at least make it pay for itself.

Be sure to capitalize on the local features of Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Foursquare to reach as many people as possible. Your link building efforts shouldn’t stop there either. Do some outreach and, if possible, work with some local micro-celebrities to capture as much attention as possible.

Assuming you have a local location to promote, be sure to get your business address attached to as many of your links as possible. Those citations are solid gold. Even if the event is hosted somewhere else, there’s no reason you can’t say something along the lines of: “For more information, get in touch at…”
Also be sure to cash in on Schema.org markup to get rich snippets in the search results.

2. Sponsor a Charity

Have a cause you care about? There’s no shame in getting some SEO value out of it while also using it to help improve your reputation. It would be beyond cynical, and unlikely to pay off, if you tried to use charities for SEO alone, but there’s no reason not to make the most of it when you do. Local businesses are the biggest contributors to charities, and they can be a great opportunity.

The most obvious bit of SEO value is a link to your site from the charity as one of their sponsors. Many charities do this simply by default, and many that don’t will still be happy to send a link to return the favor.

Causes and charities also tend to spread through social networks more readily than just about any business message. If you embrace a cause and promote it on social networks, this can be a great way to expand your reach.

Be careful when mixing promotion and charity work, however. Business involvement in social causes is often viewed with skepticism, and if you blatantly capitalize you may end up getting shunned. Only embrace those causes that you sincerely believe in. SEO and other marketing efforts should always come second.

3. Build a Tool

We’ve been mentioning tools frequently as of late, and with good reason. The most popular sites on the web are all tools, not what would traditionally be called content sites. Tools naturally attract links because they are inherently more engaging than passive content.

While a content-driven strategy certainly does require a great deal of creativity and skill, tools arguably require even more creativity. Content at least obeys a preset format: blog post, video, infographic, white paper. It may take creativity, research, and ingenuity to figure out what the content should be about and the best way to put it together, but at least you have some idea of what the end product is going to look like.

Tools are very different. Google, Facebook, and Twitter were like nothing that had come before them. Tools are designed entirely around the problem they are meant to solve, and take on completely novel forms every time they are created.

For this reason, it’s difficult to give advice on how to create a tool for SEO value. You’ll need coders, graphic designers, and a spark of ingenuity. Beyond that, the sky’s the limit. The most linked to sites on the web don’t lie. Tools that people find useful or entertaining grab more links than anything else on the web.

4. Get in Your Local Newspaper

Why go for small time blogs when you can get listed in the most reputable publication in your area? Local newspapers are hungry for content just like bloggers, and there’s nothing stopping you from getting an entry in your local paper if you put your mind to it.

Making the paper is all about one thing: being newsworthy. The rest is window dressing. If you can bring something to the table that they haven’t reported on before, that will interest their readers, then you’re already halfway there. It’s all about the “inside scoop.” What can you reveal to the press that will intrigue them?

If you don’t think you have the writing skills to make the cut, there’s a fairly simple solution for that as well. Hire somebody who’s made it into the local paper before. Ask them for feedback on whether the idea is newsworthy, and let them take it from concept to published article. A one-off job is worth the money if it means a link from an established publisher.

A word of caution here, however. Make sure the content is actually going to make it to the web. Many local newspapers only published half of their content online, and many of them delete it as time goes by. Don’t bother working with a paper unless you know the content is going to make it online and stay there. Unless, of course, the paper would bring so much exposure that it would result in natural links from secondary sources.

5. Befriend the Mom Bloggers

I’m generalizing a bit when I say “mom” blogger. They don’t need to be moms, or even female. The point is, small blogs with tightly knit communities are some of the most powerful forces to be reckoned with on the web. These small communities have tremendous influence on social networks. The community members tend to know each other very well and have developed a great deal of trust.

There are undoubtedly “mom” bloggers in your area. They keep online food diaries, review products, share design inspiration, and dominate Pinterest. Get these people on your side and you won’t just see links with SEO value, you’ll see referral traffic that doesn’t quit.

Manual Action Case Study

Reconsideration-Request-1

From page one to penalised in a blink of an eye! It’s every SEO professional’s worst fear as they realise that their months of hard work have been flagged by Matt Cutts & Co as not conforming to Google’s Search Quality Guidelines. The result?  A dreaded notification in Webmaster Tools and in most cases damaged rankings.

2012 saw the subject of reconsideration requests covered in more detail than ever before as Google stepped up their manual action, keeping even the most sensible SEO’ers on their toes!

In this blog post we’ll discuss the strategy, which we recently implemented to scale a successful reconsideration request.

Diagnosing That The Site Was Penalised

When the client initially approached us and asked us to carry out work for them, they were unsure whether or not the site was penalised.  They did however explain that they were no longer anywhere to be found for their broadest keyword (Spa Days).  They explained that at one point that they had ranked highly.

During our site analysis, alarm bells began to ring as we identified a high volume of links that had been built for this search term.  Over five per cent of the links pointing to their site were using this exact term. Although not quite a text book example of over optimisation, concern grew when took a closer look at these links.

The majority of the links using the anchor text had multiple links from the same domain (some site wide), were from low quality directories, spammy article websites, info spam blogs and most worryingly of all, sites with adult content or sites focusing on “Warez” (Pirated software).  At this point that we knew without a shadow of a doubt, that the site had likely had action taken against it.

To be 100 per cent sure of this and feedback to the client, we needed evidence.  Therefore we submitted a reconsideration request, which obviously came back as a big “No.” However we could now show our client that we were certain that they were penalised.

Taking Action

Our first step in formulating a full link removal strategy was to collect the entire list of backlinks pointing to the client’s site. We wanted to leave no stone unturned so collected the data from Google Webmaster Tools, Ahrefs and Open Site Explorer.

We then collated this into one spread sheet and removed the duplicates, giving us the full overview of links pointing to the site.  This totalled 12,000 + links, split out over 693 referring domains.

Faced with a large amount of data and knowing that the overall percentage of “unnatural links” was high, we had to find a solution that allowed us to remove as many of these as possible, in optimum time. Having run numerous successful link building campaigns using Buzz stream, we decided that this could be the perfect tool for link removal and for submitting a reconsideration request.

Using Buzz Stream To Remove Links

Buzz Stream, is a CRM system that allows users to keep a track of the relationships and links they have built.  It handles everything from recording prospects, collating metrics, to sending out template pitch emails. It wasn’t created for link removal, but it’s features are perfect for this task.

Our aim was to use the tool to work out what links needed to be removed and to use it to scale the process of emailing site owners. We also wanted to work out what links to disavow and to have everything documented in one place, so we could later show Google the efforts that had been made.

Setting Up

Out of the box Buzz stream already has a number of columns already set up. These include the basics (site name, domain), some information on top level metrics and relationship stage. The latter column is pre populated with fields that can be modified (in settings) and are geared towards link building (i.e. attempting to reach, under review, link accepted).

For link removal, we wanted to add additional custom fields via the settings section. We knew we wanted a notes section so we could add additional notes to each domain.  We also wanted to amend the relationship stages based on how we thought each site owner would respond. Based on our knowledge of link removal, these were:
  • Wants payment – To be used when a webmaster demanded cash to remove the link.
  • Unable To Contact – To be used in the event that we couldn’t find any contact information for the site owner, that the email bounced back, or that they did not respond after three occasions.
  • Link Removed – To be used if the link was removed.
With the initial administrative work out of the way, we set about crafting our template removal request email. We’ve seen instances before where black hatters have attempted to remove links without permission, so we requested that the client set us up an internal email address. This meant that there was no doubting that we were legitimately trying to remove these links with the clients permission.

With our template email we wanted to ensure that we came across as serious, but not too stern to the extent we threatened legal action (as we have seen used in some link removal cases before). We also wanted to make it very clear which links we wanted removing from the site so webmasters would instantly know where to look, and the removal rate would be higher.

It was now time to upload our data and to ensure that it was all correctly formatted. We returned to the original .CSV file that contained the list of links and stripped out everything until it was just a list of linking urls.
  • We created a new column called domain. In this we stripped back the full url to just it’s domain (Remove http:// and then find & replace /*)
  • We renamed the column that contains the full linking url to “links from”
Once the data was formatted, we imported it into Buzz stream. This is a very simple process and using their import system you can easily match column headers, allowing you to dynamically insert the information into your email templates.

The whole process took just over an hour, but we now had everything set up and were in the position where we could quickly make contact with webmasters.

 Finding Which Links To Remove

Buzz stream does a great job of quickly pulling in metrics such as page rank, Moz Domain Authority and the amount of internal links. It also quickly finds contact information pulling information from contact pages and whois records.

We focused our initial priority on the sites that were using the “Spa Days” anchor text and worked through these. In some cases it was very obvious that the sites were low quality because:
  • They were suspicious TLD’s (i.e .RU, .info)
  • They had few internal links pointing to them and subsequently low Moz D/A and Homepage Page rank
  • They contained obviously suspicious terms (Directory, Links, SEO, Articles) or adult related terms
  • They were sites that were obviously not related to the client’s product offering
In some cases, it was not as straightforward and did involve looking through the website to identify anything suspicious. Key things we identified were:
  • Generalised content about subjects not specific to the site
  • Links to suspicious sites (Viagra, porn, gambling)
  • Poor quality content
  • If a free template had been used
  • Content freshness – Had the site been recently updated
  • Was all of the content focused around providing external links
  • Mentions of sponsored or paid content
  • If site wide, footer links or blog rolls were present on the site
Once we had looked over the site, we set the relationship status in Buzz stream based on the action that we had taken.

Response Rate

As we always expected, the response rate from our link removal requests was very low. Out of the initial 200 sites we contacted we received below 50 responses.  The majority of these removed the links with no problem however in other instances webmasters wanted up to $10 a link to remove them.

Reconsideration Time

Having contacted so many websites and having had some removed we thought it would show Google a “Good faith effort” and that it was time to submit a full reconsideration request.

We exported the complete Buzz Stream history, removed columns that weren’t applicable to Google and uploaded it to Google Drive.  Sites that we had not received a response from after two attempts were filtered. With this information we quickly produced a list of websites we wished to disavow using Excel’s CONCATENATE function.

Armed with our disavow tool and spread sheet we then submitted a full, concise reconsideration request,  linked to the spread sheet we’d uploaded to drive and contained full information:
  • We listed any violations of Google’s quality guidelines – In this case low quality links had been built in an attempt to pass page rank
  • We explained that it was the client’s previous SEO company (We didn’t name them)
  • We explained that we had conducted a full analysis of the back link portfolio and had removed links from sites that had replied. We also explained that when sites hadn’t replied we had added these to the disavow tool
  • We linked to the Google Doc, which included information on who we had contacted
  • We explained that this would not happen again and that we understood what is classed as a quality link.
Google’s Response
Google responded within five days of us submitting the reconsideration request.  Strangely the response was not in Webmaster Tools, but was sent through to the email account I have linked to it. They notified us that although a good effort had been made, there were still links that needed removing. They also included a list of examples, all of which we had not contacted.

Back To the Drawing Board

Having already worked through hundreds of the links, removing through the rest was a simple process. We quickly worked through the other pages that contained links and attempted to contact a further 75.  Like with our initial attempt, the response rate was very low, but we added the “no replies” to the disavow tool.
After one final sweep through Buzz stream we were certain that every single unnatural link to the site had been dealt with by either disavowing it, or by removing it.

I updated both the Disavow list and the spread sheet, and notified Google by replying to their email.

Google’s Response Part 2

On this occasion it took Google a little longer to reply, but it was worth the wait.  They responded to notify us that the manual action had been revoked.

The Importance of Quality Score in 2013

google-quality-score
Everyone in search engine marketing knows that Quality Score is important. But you may not realize that Quality Score is more important now than ever. That’s because as average Quality Scores have fallen over the last 4 years, the benefits you get from having an above-average score is far greater in 2013 than it was in the past.

How much greater? And how can you get a piece of those cost benefits? Let’s start by looking at what a typical Quality Score distribution looks like in 2013.

The Typical AdWords Quality Score Distribution Today

Earlier this year, I manually analyzed several hundred AdWords accounts too look at what the average Quality Score distribution looks like today. Here’s a picture of what the impression-weighted average Quality Score looks like in a typical account:

quality-score-averages
The key takeaway here is that the average Quality Score is now 5/10 (this is down from 7/10 back in 2009). You can see from the chart that Quality Scores of 3/10 and 4/10 are much more common than they were 4 years ago.

Why Quality Score Is Up to 200% More Valuable in 2013

Without getting too technical, I’d like to share some quick data that illustrates the increased importance of Quality Score in AdWords. These tables show the kinds of discounts (or penalties) you can expect to see based on your Quality Score for a given keyword, relative to the average Quality Score of 5/10.

quality-score-discount-table

In 2013, if your keyword has a Quality Score of 10, you can save an estimated 50% on the cost of each click. Note that this is 67% more than you saved four years ago for the same Quality Score. Why? Because average Quality Scores have fallen over time, meaning that higher Quality Scores are even more beneficial and save you more relative to other advertisers.

Figuring out Your Average Quality Score

A quick and easy way to figure out your Average Quality Score is to run the my Free AdWords Grader application, which will generate you a Quality Score report card that shows the distribution of your keyword Quality Score and computes the average value as shown here:

calculate-quality-score

3 Non-Obvious Ways to Improve Your Quality Score Now

So how can you raise your own Quality Scores and start seeing these cost benefits? Easy – just raise your Click Through rates. There’s a near straight line relationship between Quality Score vs. CTR. Recently I took a look at a bunch of accounts with +8/10 average quality scores and found the following 3 things in common among the over-achievers.
  1. Bid on Branded Keywords – Branded keywords get on average CTR’s of between 30-80%. This generates a tremendous uplift in your account average CTR, and creates a remarkably beneficial uplift on all the other keyword quality scores in your account. You absolutely must try this out.
  2. Target The Long Tail – Ideally +75% of your impressions should be accrued to keywords with 3+ word keyword phrases.
  3. Stay Active in Your Account – Many PPC account managers are lazy bums that do nothing at all in their AdWords accounts. These clowns go nowhere. All of the top achievers with above 8/10 average Quality Scores were active in their accounts every week, regularly trying out new keywords, deleting lousy keywords, trying out new ads, employing negative keywords, etc.
These are just 3 ways that you can increase your Quality Scores. The key takeaway is that an above average CTR and Quality Score will help you beat your competitors – both in terms of getting more exposure and paying less for your clicks, and that taking action today is worth more than ever!

Local SEO in 5 Easy Process

Natural SEO Solutions

Local SEO is probably one of the toughest on-line marketing strategies to implement. This is partly because of Google’s strict local algorithm, which takes into account several factors. Long gone are the days where you could build a large amount of links and expect your local business to rank on the first page. Link building is one of multiple factors that Google takes into consideration when placing you on the coveted first page of a local search result (7 Pack). The purpose of this article is to provide readers with quick action steps on how to place your local business at the top of the local SERPS (search engine results page).

Step 1

Check and see if your target keywords trigger the local algorithm (see image below). Generally speaking, key phrase combinations like city + keyword triggers a local search result (7 pack). There are still many services which do not trigger the 7 pack. If your local business is such a service, then this would make ranking a lot easier as it would rely more on the traditional SEO strategy of relevant link building versus a more localized SEO strategy (directories and citations).

search
Step 2

One of the critical steps in local search is determining where your business is geographically located. And it goes without saying, it’s always easier to rank in your local city. This is because the local Google algorithm will always give preference to businesses located within a geographical boundary (city). On-line marketers call this the “centroid” bias. This basically translates into Google giving preference to businesses located closest to the downtown area of a city. So if you are trying to rank for “Dallas hair salons” then those salons located closest to the downtown area will be given preference, all other things being equal. So if your business is located outside a metropolitan area, then ranking for that city may be a daunting task (even impossible for competitive niches).

Step 3

Next, determine how competitive your niche is. Take the first business that is ranking #1 in the 7 pack. Now copy the name, address and phone of this result and place quotation marks around it. For example, “XYZ business 1225 Saint Regis Drive Houston, Texas 972-781-5656.” See image below for an example. Make sure you copy the NAP exactly as it’s displayed in the 7 pack. Now put this in a Google search with quotation marks and see how many results show up. This will give you an approximate idea as to how many directories and citations you will need to outrank the top listing in the 7 pack. Repeat this process for the lowest ranked business in the 7-pack. Write down the number of results that Google shows. Now repeat the same process for your own business NAP. Your results would have to beat the lowest ranked business in the 7-pack to be included. Obviously, the quality of your backlink profile, customer reviews and various additional factors will come into play. This method is simply to gauge how much effort will be required to be included in the 7-pack.

semrush
Step 4

Now that you are armed with all the necessary information, its time to get to work. First step is to get listed in relevant local directories. This not only means Google Places and Yelp, but also directories local to your city and specific niche. So if you’re a plumber, getting listed in the local plumbers association for your city would be a great start. The goal is to get listed in as many local directories as possible. The local Chamber of Commerce is also a great place to get listed. Even if you cannot place links, just getting a plain listing is good enough. The 2 important factors here are relevancy and of course, being local to your target city. Make sure these two factors are covered when doing directory inclusions as well.

Step 5

Last, but certainly not least, make sure you accurately implement NAP (name, address and phone number) of your business in all the local directories. And more importantly, make sure that all the citations have your NAP listed in exactly the same way across all the directories (including your own website). Any inaccuracies will result in a loss of valuable SEO juice. The Google algorithm may be complex, but it’s still just an algorithm. A slight variation in the NAP may signal to Google that its a different business. Ensure that all your NAP’s are identical for effective optimization. This is a critical part of local SEO, which a lot of businesses seem to overlook.

And there you have it. An effective local SEO strategy in 5 easy steps. Just following this simple action plan should put you on the road to higher local rankings and traffic in a short period of time.

Why Does SEO Take So Long?

It’s a question many frustrated business owners have asked again and again. It’s a completely valid question–yet one that rarely gets answered to anyone’s satisfaction.

Here then, is a nuts-and-bolts answer to the question of why search engine optimization takes so much time. As you’ll see, this frequently time-consuming process is all part of an assurance that your SEO dollars are well-spent.

Analyzing Your Competition Takes More Time than You May Think

Unless you’re selling a product or service that is less than a month or two old, you will have competitors who are already ranking well in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). Simply getting on equal ground with them is a task that can take time.

To tell the truth, even the best SEO analyst will need to take time to find out where and what that ground actually is. In most markets, your competitors have spent a decade or more building both their websites, and links to those websites. A thorough competitive analysis will take into account every link that leads to every competitor result that shows up on the first few pages of results that rank for your desired keywords. Link tools like Majestic SEO or Open Site Explorer can be helpful in developing an understanding of where the ground is.

open site explorer

Search marketing competitive analysis tools can also be used to help you assess the level of competition in your domain. These tools are offered by a handful of companies like iSpionage and Spyfu. A new entrant in the web hosting space for instance might use iSpionage’s comparison functionality to assess the level of competition for industry keywords.

When you see large numbers of first page keywords and SEO traffic value in the millions, then you know that competition is going to be fierce. In many markets with entrenched competitors that have been competing for some time, a strategy of optimizing longer-tail terms that will be able to compete within specific industry niches and sub- niches is often the best approach to take.

Build Links from Sites with Authority

Once you or your SEO provider develops these insights, the next step is to find common sites that your competitors use for backlinks. There are often anywhere from 5-100 different sites that all of your major competitors will use for rank-boosting backlinks.
You will need to create a database of every link pointing at the top 50 pages that rank for each one of your keywords. You need to know how many of those links come from the same sites, and from which pages on those sites, and how often. From this, you may be able to see how to grab some of those links for your own site.

Then you need to find links from pages that none of your competition is using. At the very least, you should look for links that a very small percentage of your competition is using. These days, it’s difficult to find quality sites for backlinks, that aren’t already being used extensively. But it is possible. It is also crucial to your success.

As you can imagine, all of this takes time. And it’s only the beginning.

Getting On “Ground Zero” With Your Competitors Takes Time

compassAfter that, you or your provider must procure links in one of several ways: content creation, paid link placement, paid content creation, guest posts, site creation, subdomain creation, link bartering, content trading, etc.

Regardless of whether these links are paid for, traded, or otherwise acquired, dealing with site owners can take time. Blogs and Web 2.0 pages built on your behalf need to be written by good writers who understand SEO–and who probably already have a lot on their plates.

Then, you or your SEO agency should ensure that every image has an appropriate file name, title, and alternate text, specific to (usually) a single keyword, on each page where it appears. And your content should have images, typically, on every single page.

Since a good search engine campaign involves all types of content, your provider will need to make videos on your behalf–and make sure that each video has the right file name, and the right title (for both the video and the page), the right description, and even the right account name.
As you can see, each of the literally thousands–and usually tens of thousands–of links that your site needs in order to rank well, needs to be supported by an entire page that has been precision-engineered in at least a dozen different ways.

As you can see, effective link building takes time. But it is definitely worth the wait.

Google Rarely Trusts Speed

cheetahIn light of the above point, it’s also important to understand that Google is wary of links that gain too much popularity, too quickly.

At one time, you could create hundreds of links literally overnight and reap the benefits. The benefits usually didn’t last, but then you could do it again. And again and again, until you either gained the traction you wanted or got banned from Google’s search engine.

These days, all it takes is a slight portion of unnatural-looking links headed your way in a short period of time to put you on the penalty box with Google. Google may not remove your site from its index entirely, but it may apply such a heavy penalty that you won’t really know the difference.
That doesn’t mean that getting lots of links all at once will instantly sink your ship. In fact, getting hundreds of links from an article that goes viral on Facebook, Twitter, or another social media site, is a recipe for success.

But Google has gotten very good at detecting “link spam”. In fact, some would say it’s gotten a little too good. And while it’s just fine to share your content on Facebook and get as many links as possible in as short a period of time, too many links in too short a time can trigger a manual review. If you or your provider are using techniques that provide too many links too quickly, this review could sink your ship almost overnight.

So if your SEO provider doesn’t build links at quite the pace you’d like to see—rest easy. They’re actually doing you a favor.

Good SEO Takes Fine Tuning Along the Way

Once this work is thoughtfully undertaken, you or your provider will then have to deal with the fact that Google does not stay the same. And neither does Bing and Yahoo!

more ispionage

The way search engines rank sites can change overnight. These changes have brought many profitable websites to their knees, knocking out six-, seven-, and even eight-figure businesses literally overnight. The most dramatic of these updates are known as Panda and Penguin, although there have been others.

At the end of the day, no one but the search engines have control over the SEO landscape. What you do have control over is how you respond to the changes. Good information from good systems and SEO know-how is often the difference between “sink” and “swim” when it comes to the business you conduct online.

SEO on your Budget

Whether it’s a product, service, instructions, or just information, most people use major search engines like Google and Bing to find what they want. Most businesses can’t afford to ignore search engine optimization (SEO) anymore – the potential audience is too vast.

SEO is about improving and promoting your website so that more people can find it using search engines. Many small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) feel that they don’t have the time or resources to compete for search traffic, especially when they’re up against major retailers like Amazon or eBay. The truth is that there are many ways for SMBs to compete for search traffic – especially if they are smart about allocating time and budget. Here are some free and inexpensive ways a business can get better at SEO.

Be Realistic

A small business with a small budget probably can’t go after search keywords that have a lot of national competition. Instead of chasing an impossible dream, think hard about the keywords you can target and rank for that will get the most bang for your buck. Locally focused keywords are usually a great place to start. If you’re a plumber in Des Moines, you don’t need to rank for “plumbing” or even “Iowa plumber” – you’ll have more success targeting “Des Moines plumber” (and get better qualified leads as a result, too).

Don’t have a locally focused business? Figure out what your niche is. Dive into what makes your business unique (your Unique Value Proposition) and start there. You may not be able to rank for “wedding jewelry” but you could rank for “unique vintage-inspired wedding jewelry” or “eco-friendly wedding jewelry.”
The other area in which it’s important for SMBs to be realistic is the amount of time SEO will take. Full-time SEO can often start getting results for a site in a month or two, but if you’re not able to devote that kind of time or budget to SEO it’s going to take longer than that to see results – maybe as much as a year or two. Even in the best of cases, SEO isn't a quick fix so don’t expect a turnaround overnight. It can help to have more specific goals than just “more traffic” or “more revenue.” Are there specific keywords you want to rank for? Specific products you’d most like to sell? These can help you prioritize your efforts more efficiently.

Dress the Part

Search engines are leery of businesses that don’t seem credible. Take some time to make sure you’ve got an up-to-date, professional design (using some of your precious budget to update your design would probably not go amiss). This would also be a good time to do some good old-fashioned brand building. Search engines trust established brands more, because users do! So when you build your brand you’ll be doing better with both.

The most important component of both on-site SEO and link building is that you have something compelling to optimize and share. With that in mind, start thinking about how you can make your website a resource for your users. Start brainstorming ideas for unique, interesting content pieces you can share with your community, and then make an editorial calendar so everyone on your team is on the same page about when new content will be added. You can even bring in a part-time writer as budget allows.

Use What You Have

You already have a website – before you do anything else, you might as well make your site the best site it can be. Just like you’d clean up your house before inviting people over for a party, make your site as search-friendly as you can before you start trying to attract more search engine attention to it. The SEOmoz Beginner’s Guide to SEO has some great starter tips for things to improve on your site, including code, page speed, usability and content.

Now is also the time to sign up for some free tools. If you don’t already have analytics installed, Google Analytics is a must-have. It allows you to track user behavior all over your site, including where visitors come from and what they do or buy. You should also sign up for a Google Webmaster Tools account, so you can easily monitor errors and traffic spikes on your site.

Some additional free resources for on-site SEO:

• Xenu Link Sleuth: Finds broken links and other errors on your site.
• Google Page Speed: A browser plugin that makes recommendations on how to improve the time it takes for pages on your site to load.
• SEOBook Tools: A variety of resources around tracking and improving on-site SEO and rankings.

Build Links

More doesn't always mean better, especially in the case of link building. It’s better to build good links from trusted sources than to resort to shady practices just to build link volume.

Start by asking yourself “who are my website’s friends?” Any partners, vendors, colleagues, professional associations or other websites with which your business is affiliated are a great place to start reaching out for links. It’s easy to ask them, too, since you already know them! See if you can write a guest post on their blog, or if they’d like to write (and link to) a post on yours.

Next, take a look at the sites that you want to link to you. This might include:
• Bloggers in your niche
• Sites that link to your competitors
• Local sites in your area

Open Site Explorer is a great tool for viewing which sites link to other sites, whether yours or your competitors. The full option requires a paid membership, but there is a free version that will give you some data until you’re ready to invest in a tool. Once you've got a list of sites from which you’d like a link, start reaching out and trying to build relationships with the site owners. Don’t just call or email asking for the link; instead, see where you can form a longer-term partnership. What can you do for the site owner? How can you collaborate? These relationships yield more links over time. You don’t have to spend all your time doing this – focus on ten or so sites at a time.

Keep it Going

The most important thing you can do for your website’s SEO is to keep doing it. Keep making changes and improvements to your website, then measuring their effect with Google Analytics and making further improvements as necessary. Keep creating new content pieces, measuring how well they resonate with your users and link targets, and creating new pieces accordingly. Keep prospecting for new link targets, building relationships with them, and maintaining them over time. Even if you don’t have a lot of time to devote to any of these things, doing a little at a time over a long period of time will be far more effective than a set-it-and-forget-it approach.

SEO Steps and Processes You Can Do Without This Process

Part of succeeding in any aspect of business is being efficient. Different tools and companies often create extra steps for you, and whether they mean well or not, it’s up to you as a webmaster to be able to see through what’s necessary and what’s just going to waste your time and cloud your vision. When it comes to SEO, there have been quite a few steps that have been added over the years for companies looking to improve their optimization. It can be tricky to see through what you really need because SEO is always changing, and with all of the Google updates and growing influence of social, things move at a fast pace. It’s important to ask yourself: How can I remove unnecessary SEO steps in order to obtain more social shares, links, conversions, and improved rankings?

The “Extras” of SEO

The extra aspects of SEO often occur when user experience and Google bots experience do not match up. Google and other major search engines want user experience and SEO to correlate completely (after all, that’s really the point of SEO in the first place); however this can be difficult. If you find yourself doing something for the sake of SEO, it’s important to always remember that readers should come first. If Google hasn’t caught the mix-up yet, they will soon enough.
According to SEOMoz and some of my own research and experiences, below are a few examples of things you could make easier for users while still keeping your SEO efforts successful:
  • You want backlinks; so do not make embed codes too complicated.
Embed codes are a great way to help make it easy for users to share your content and therefore improve your visibility. If a user can embed a video or an image to his/her site, you’re likely looking at a backlink as well. Traditionally embed codes are at least a two step process—copy and paste or a pop-up message asking if you want to copy the code (like with Bitly)—yet they only have to be a single-step process. Consider including just one button that a user has to press that will immediately allow them to grab (or copy) the embed code and then he/she can insert it wherever makes sense.
  • Do not ask for a bunch of information on a sign-up form because you want to keep people on your site.
Part of good SEO is making it easy to navigate around a website and find a sign-up form. You want your readers to be able to subscribe to your emails so that you have that address; however companies are beginning to ask for more and more information about what the readers wants to read, where he/she works, what type of business he/she owns, etc. The key is to keep this form short. Just get yourself the name and the email address. You have to remember that more and more people are beginning to use mobile devices to fill in sign-up forms, and the last thing anyone wants is a lot of typing. Ask for these details in an email later.
  • Keep users logged-in to keep engagement high.
It’s always best to give your readers an option to remain signed-in to your website. Visiting a site and always having to sign-in in order to leave a comment or update a profile is annoying, and this goes back to the idea about the use of mobile devices. People aren’t going to feel like constantly signing into your website if they want to leave a comment or engage with a piece, and so they won’t. The Google bots like to see engagement and social shares (especially +1s), and making sure that your readers can do this easily is a must. You can learn more about how to set this up here.

What steps do you think can be removed from an SEO operation? Is there anything that you think has just gotten in the way of your SEO efforts? Let us know your story and your thoughts in the comments below.

Is Multinational SEO Dead? No, But It’s Changing…

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about the term “SEO” and what it really means today. After a record run of attending conferences, ranging from San Jose, Toronto, London and Leeds, soon to be joined by Seattle and Riga, I’ve become very conscious of a cloud of what can only be described as “SEO Depression” unfolding over conference panelists (though much less so for the delegates themselves).

The recurring narrative seems to be that Matt Cutts, like some kind of demon, is always about to unleash a torrent of difficulties for SEO folks. One area which has come under heavy scrutiny in light of the recent Panda/Penguin updates is link building and adding links to your site. Unlike some colleagues, I don’t believe that link building is over, but I do think that those inbound links have to have a genuine value for users, otherwise they’re really not going to help much.
To be honest, that’s been one of the search engines’ objectives for quite some time — to use links as an indicator of quality. So, if you’ve been “gaming” the system to get links, you’re much more likely to fall under the microscope each time a new change hits.
I’m not going to write one of those posts about SEO being dead, because I certainly don’t believe that to be the case. But, I do think it’s worth examining some of the common anxieties within the industry, especially as applied to Multinational SEO.

PPC Or SEO To Go First? Best Not To Work In Silos!

One of the things I hear often is the concern that paid search is eating into organic search, making SEO either less relevant or a less worthwhile time/financial investment. This strikes me as the wrong way to look at it.
If paid search is supplanting organic search permanently or temporarily (or, indeed, at all), that doesn’t change the fact that strong SEO is an integral part of any online marketing plan. If your competitors invest in SEO while you don’t, they’re going to see gains that you’re missing out on. SEO and PPC often work hand-in-hand, and you can make use of both while still erring on the side of caution.
For example, I no longer believe it makes sense for any company to roll out an international SEO programme to multiple countries without also having a PPC campaign in place. In some cases, we would recommend leading with PPC and landing pages first, rather than full blown (and relatively expensive) international SEO.
There are a number of reasons why we recommend this, but one is that user satisfaction on your site can be measured much more quickly with PPC than with SEO. Behavior really matters — so if you can study it first and quickly with PPC, your SEO efforts later will work out to be much more successful. I do worry that the association of search engine warnings with SEO being “bad” are beginning to stick with people who are newer to the industry, and therefore, SEO is having a health warning attached.
There is no doubt that not looking after your SEO health could potentially have even bigger commercial consequences for your organization — but if you walk away, you’ll never actually know what you lost until a competitor shows you the way (which they surely will).

The Power of Language — Is International Marketing Now More Significant?

A conversation with a translation agency this last week also made me chuckle. Because translation agencies have seen an opportunity to sell more services from their existing resource networks, they’ve created terms to cover the services they’re adding to their websites.
This has given rise to terms like “MSEO” (supposed to stand for “multilingual SEO”) and “transcreation,” another invented term meaning that a team of translators can create semi-original content based on the original text, but with a significant degree of latitude. If you see either of these terms, run a mile. In fact, run ten!
In 15 years, I’ve never heard these terms coming from the mouth of a client (though it’s possible they’re being used by the localization teams). We prefer “SEO Localization,” which we see as a very specific but different process involving both SEO teams (including SEO linguists and translators). However, the conversation added to the feeling of disquiet I have about the terms we use ourselves.
On the other hand, sometimes language can make a huge difference. For example, we recently decided to change the name of our International SEO School in Barcelona to “International Marketing School.” This means we’re up against some big-name competition, but it definitely doesn’t mean we’ll no longer be offering international SEO courses (which have, to date, been the most successful).
I came to the conclusion, after feedback from delegates, customers and others in the industry, that an international SEO course from an international marketing school was more acceptable than one from the equivalent “SEO School.”

Maybe “Culture” & “Multilingual” Are Winning Terms For The Future

There are some important lessons I’ve learned over the years. When someone says that there’s no real difference between “SEO” and “international” or “multilingual SEO,” they probably have never had their hands dirty in running a serious international SEO campaign. If they focus solely on geo-targeting, then they’ve probably have never had a large client. And, if they have “translation partners” to deliver the language element, or they talk about “translating keywords,” run a mile (or several hundred).
Culture Or Technique? Which Is The Most Important? Source:Webcertain
Culture Or Technique? Which Is The Most Important? Source:Webcertain
Essentially, the word “multilingual,” or even “multicultural,” should become a much more significant part of everyone’s thinking — more important, in fact, than the “SEO” or “PPC” part. In this case, you really need to put the cart before the horse. What that means in practical terms is:
  1. Understand who your customers are first
  2. Decide how best to reach out to them
  3. Then implement PPC, SEO, Social Media in whatever appropriate mix makes sense.
The point is that the “multilingual”/cultural bit is really important. It’s actually an integrated part of every step you take on your international site — not something that you can relegate to “later.”
Opinions expressed in the article are those of the guest author and not necessarily Search Engine Land.

SEO Techniques

SEO

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of increasing the visibility of your website or webpage via natural, unpaid search results When a search is conducted on Google, Bing, or any other search engine, you want your site to be one of the top search results Internet search engine optimization is a powerful web marketing technique, as you increase visits to your website as well as the chances of people signing up for your services It's a proven fact that search engine traffic can make or break your company's success

=====================================================================================

What is Search Engine Marketing – or SEM?

SEM is a form of Internet marketing technique that promotes websites by increasing their visibility on search engines through paid as well as organic results. While it has some similarities with SEO, SEM is much more than worrying about simple keyword content and placement. It examines anchor text, external link popularity, the diversity of link resources, and more.

Spend some time engaging your audience through social media and you will be able to:
Build brand identity and awareness, and gain higher exposure among your target audience.

Build a steady stream of website traffic by drawing users through smart Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising that is designed NOT to go beyond your specified budget.

Position your company's services and products in a better manner than your competitors to make it easy for customers to choose.

Grow your revenue and profits.

How do SEM services work?

Increasing your SEM efforts means ensuring that your website is regularly indexed by the leading search engines that use crawlers to find pages based on their search algorithms. Pages that are not immediately indexed, but require attention of the target audience, can be made visible using PPC which draws users to landing pages on your site, providing an answer to their queries and ensuring higher search engine ranking for your website, later on. Search engine marketing also means preventing crawling in some cases, whenever appropriate. SEM is useful for increasing your site’s prominence by cross linking with other prominent and relevant sites. This requires a well-planned marketing analysis and careful steps in order to optimise complete SEM strategy.

Why is it important to invest in SEM services?

. Your customers are seeking you on the Internet, but search engines are not paid for organic search traffic, and they follow unbiased mechanism for indexing the websites on SERPs. Moreover, search algorithms continue to change. So you need someone on your side to let you know what changes are necessary in your SEM strategy to ensure high page rank and greater visibility on the web.
. By spending a little well-timed money on PPC advertising, you can better understand your audience, while drawing stream of prospects to your website where they can find the services and products you sell.
. You can take advantage of analysis techniques that tell you what customers are searching for, so that you can target their searches with a smart PPC approach.
. Decrease your overall expenditure on PPC thorough Search Engine Marketing methods that ensure the clicks you pay for are useful customer leads. Less waste equals more revenue in your pockets.

How is SEM Achieved?

SEM is achieved by carefully examining the marketing strategy your company needs to increase visibility and convert searchers into customers. By applying a careful approach to your SEM plan, you can take advantage of:
Paid placement of ads where your customers are more likely to find you and click to see your offerings.

Contextual advertising that ensures better visibility through relevant search traffic.

Paid inclusion of your ads in useful results pages where searchers are more likely to see your ad and click it for more information about your products and services.

Pay Per Click Marketing

PPC marketing (pay per click marketing) allows you to bid on the phrases your customers use when they search for your products in search engines such as Google, but you only pay per click when they come through to your website.  PPC marketing is truly is a pay-for-performance advertising medium.
Pay Per Click PPC marketing continues to experience huge growth, and is part of any good online marketing strategy. PPC has now overtaken most 'traditional' advertising and the trend is still continuing, with Google announcing further increased revenues in Q . This form of marketing is certainly here to stay, and looks set to increase during the recession.
Google now accounts for % of all UK search traffic, and we can deliver targeted traffic through both Google's Ad words search and content network to get maximum exposure for your pay per click search marketing campaign.  We can also set up your campaign to generate clicks from other networks including MSN and Yahoo! if you require.

Why use a Pay Per Click PPC marketing agency?

Wasting budget is very easy with PPC marketing. Our PPC consultants are well experienced in large campaign budgets running over multiple search networks and this daily exposure helps them optimize your budget and avoid costly mistakes. Also, having a team on-hand removes the problems of your staff being away from the office and keeps the PPC marketing campaign running smoothly.
Our experienced PPC team are qualified Google Adwords Professionals who boast years of industry experience, so they know the tips and tricks to run PPC management effectively, lower the CPC (amount you pay per click) and increase return on investment.  They also work with the latest pay per click bid management technology.
SWASH Convergence SEO is a Google Adwords qualified company, which we consider an essential stamp of confidence as Google have made checks on our pay per click consultants and ensured we have successfully managed a large volume of PPC campaigns.  Changes in Google's technology happen regularly, so it's important you have a team at the helm who keeps up with the latest pay per click industry techniques.
Whilst Google now offer many automated functions from their Adwords control center, or even to have one of their consultants optimise your campaign if your spend is high enough, be aware that their objective is to increase your spend.  Having your pay per click management from a qualified agency allows true independance, and you can monitor the results with our regular PPC campaign reporting.
